Work in Progress:

LETTERPRESS AMSTERDAM

In June 2019 I went to Amsterdam to draw my friend and master of all things letterpress, Thomas Gravemaker. I have been planning to draw Thomas at work for many years. Time always being short and Thomas working seven long days a week teaching workshops, and conferences, design work etc, a week was the best I could hope for. And what a week it was.

That week, Thomas had one student specially booked in. Vibeke Luther O’Rourke visiting from Oslo National Academy of the Arts, to learn about photopolymer printing. Vibeke had been working on a commission from the Norwegian authorities to create a book of commemoration to honour those lost in the terrorist attack on the Worker’s Youth League Summer Camp in 2011. Thomas and Vibeke worked with great intensity, and joy for their love of Letterpress printing. My work from this fascinating week continues. With the aim of creating a body of work capturing  the various processes and drawing two exceptionally skilled and likeable creative characters.
